Are you in Pain?
Physiotherapy is an evidence-based approach to managing lots of different types of physical pain. Pain is a complex issue that must be handled in a personalised way. We are highly trained in pain and injury management.

Have you had a recent fall or injury?
Have you recently suffered from a fall resulting in injury?
Are you struggling to make a full recovery?
Often simple, easy to use self-management techniques can help get you back to your normal-self as quickly as possible. Physiotherapy is an assessment and management process designed to empower people with the tools they need to overcome their pain or injury, and maximise their potential.
No injury of note, but still in pain?
Pain is not synonymous with structural damage. Sometimes we can be in pain even if we haven't had a specific injury. Deciphering what your pain is telling you is what we do!
It may be a protective message, a compensatory mechanism or a warning sign. Whatever it is, it's personal to you and must be treated as such.
Have you had surgery recently? Or failed to fully recover from previous surgery?
When getting back to normal after surgery your rehabilitation is just as important as the operation itself. Surgery can leave you weaker, more sensitive, more unfit & sometimes unsure what's safe to do in the future. Don't stay in the dark. We have extensive experience working in rehabilitation and are ready to help you!
Unsure about what's best for your pain?
Ice or heat? (Or Both?!)
Rest or exercise?
Sit or stand?
Stretch or strengthen?
Avoid painful movements or embrace them?
Knowing what to do can be a minefield and can make all the difference when dealing with an injury.
Do you know anyone becoming increasingly Frail?
Latest evidence would suggest that without specific exercise, we could lose up to 10% muscle power each decade, after the age of 30!
By the time we're 80, we could be as low as 40% of our previous strength.
Have you or someone you know had a fall?
Statistically once we've had one fall we are much more likely to have another one in the future. falling in our older years can have catastrophic ripple effects.
Do you put aches and pains simply down to the effects of ageing?
Our perspectives on what happens when we age can influence our activity levels. Many people assume that as they get older their activity levels will naturally decline, and are quite accepting when they get pains. This does not have to be the case!
Do you suffer from osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is often perceived as a wearing away of our skeletal system that causes pain. In reality lots of the changes associated with Osteoarthritis are normal & not always painful. Also the concept of 'wearing away' is misleading - exercise DOES NOT lead to wearing away & can help reduce pain, improve strength and function in people who have a diagnosis of Osteoarthritis.
Have you been told you've got a problem with your Spinal discs?
Disc injuries can be painful. But not always. Statistically over 50% of people over the age of 30 (that's me!) will have 'Disc Degeneration' on an MRI scan but NO PAIN!
Similarly; over 50% of people above the age of 40 will have a 'Disc Bulge' on an MRI scan but suffer from NO PAIN. MRI scans can be very useful but don't always tell the full picture.
Have you had pain for more than 6 months?
Pain is a protective response. It is essential following an injury but over time can become over-protective! Most episodes of pain that last for longer than 6 months are no longer linked to structure and are much more likely to be linked to 'sensitisation'. Want to learn more?
Have you had a Stroke / CVA?
A stroke can leave people with a very unique set of symptoms including weakness, tightness, reduced function / mobility as well as a number of other potentially debilitating issues. Exercise & rehabilitation is essential in order to maximise your recovery and accessing community services can often be very difficult.
Once assessed, we can set a specific plan to help you achieve your goals, and will always be honest when assessing long-term issues.
Do you suffer from Parkinson's / Parkinsonism>
Parkinson's is caused when damage to brain cells results in a reduciton in the amount of Dopamine your brain can produce. This can lead to an inhibition of nerve impulses travelling around the body and can cause symptoms such as stiffness, shuffling & tremor to name a few.
Read our blog about Parkinson's HERE.
Exercise is recommended to preserve physical function for as long as possible.
Do you suffer with osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis, a loss of bone density, often associated with ageing, can lead people to avoiding exercise due to the increased risk of injury. According to recent research engaging in exercise regularly can improve bone density in older people. Things can get better!
Do any of these strike a chord?!
Physiotherapy has been proven to help reduce pain and improve function in people suffering from lots of different conditions. At South Notts Physio we take pride in education too. Dealing with evidence-based medicine only we aim to empower you to learn the facts and take control of your own future. Regardless of your age or background, or what you may have been told in the past.
